VIRAL - ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and its Controversy - The Pros and Cons by Lora Christelle Lim

VIRAL - ALS Ice Bucket Challenge and its Controversy - If you log into your Facebook account, you will see multiple videos of people pouring a bucket of water filled with ice over their heads. It has become a sensation where people from all walks of life including celebrities all join in for a cause. Initially, I was one of those who rolled their eyes at the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge as I thought it was lame and a complete waste of water. However, after reading up on how it has significantly raised greater awareness on ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) and increased donations, I decided to do my part after being nominated by Andrew Lee on Facebook instead of simply ignoring the nomination. After making a donation at www.alsa.org, I went to my swimming pool to do the ice bucket challenge in order not to waste water. After all, according to the United Nations website http://www.un.org/waterforlifedecade/scarcity.shtml, "around 700 million people in 43 countries suffer today from water scarcity". Therefore, we should not waste precious water.

What is ALS? - Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects nerve cells in the brain and the spinal cord. Motor neurons reach from the brain to the spinal cord and from the spinal cord to the muscles throughout the body. The progressive degeneration of the motor neurons in ALS eventually leads to their death. When the motor neurons  die, the ability of the brain to initiate and control muscle movement is lost. With voluntary muscle action progressively affected, patients in the later stages of the disease may become totally paralyzed. Most commonly, ALS strikes people between the ages of 40 and 70, and as many as 30,000 Americans have the disease at any given time. - www.alsa.org

Ice Bucket Challenge Phenomenon - The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge has raised an impressive amount of money and greater awareness of the ALS Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis disease. In just 1 month, the ALS Association has raised more than $80 million in donations.

Top 3 PROs and CONs of the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge

1. It has gone viral on Social Media and all other forms of news and effectively raised greater awareness of the ALS disease and helped raised significant amounts of donations to the ALS association.

2. It has raised community spirits and promote the idea of giving back to community to help the less fortunate. It creates a sense of bonding within the community especially among friends on Social Media Platforms such as Facebook, Blogs, Instagram etc. It is where people all around the world, from all walks of life, come together for a good cause.

3. It has helped raised the topic and concern of Charity - what is Charity? what is defined as a Charitable act? how are our donations being handled? how can we contribute towards a greater good?

=============================

1. Waste of Water - It is a complete waste of water. There are many people who overdo it by filling huge buckets of water and ice and wasting water while others in less fortunate parts of the World suffer from water scarcity.

2. Just For Show - Some people only do the Ice Bucket Challenge and did not donate a single cent. While some do it just for fun's sake, there are others who simply ignore being nominated.

3. Accidental Deaths & related injuries - The cold ice water may cause sudden cardiac death linked to hypothermia. Furthermore, there are many accidents that happened where the heavy buckets dropped and injured the heads of many participants.
