Brunei Darussalam - Just a 2 hours 10 mins flight time from Singapore which makes it an ideal close holiday destination for a short relaxing getaway. An Economy ticket on Singapore airlines cost around SGD480-SGD550 while a Business Class ticket costs around SGD1580. As the oil-rich country is quite small, spending 2-3 days visiting the country should be sufficient. As most of you know by now, I tend to travel on my own without engaging any tour agencies. I plan my own trip and do the entire research reading books and googling on the internet. I usually rent a car or rely on taxis, trains and buses to get around. The shocking thing is that Brunei has very few taxis and you can wait for hours by the road. Each taxi trip cost around SGD30-40 and they do not use any meter. They charge you for each trip and you need to get your hotel to call for a taxi. So I highly recommend hiring a car instead as I spent close to SGD300 on taxi just for 3 days in Brunei. On the other hand, hiring a car would cost less than SGD200 for 3 days! Brunei is a small country and is really easy to drive around!
The capital city is Bandar Seri Begawan where I stayed at The Empire Hotel & Country Club (http://www.theempirehotel.com/) which was awarded "Best Golf Resort in Asia Pacific by Asian Golf Monthly 2011!" The Empire Hotel & Country Clubroom rates are not expensive starting from SGD250 a night for a Superior room and up till SGD2000 for the Ambassador Suite Room depending on the dates you choose. It is the number 1 hotel in Brunei and is highly affordable! The entire hotel complex cost US1.1 billion dollars to build!!! The hotel is situated by the South China Sea and the swimming pools are facing the sea. You can also laze by the private beach for hotel guests only. The hotel facilities were amazing with indoor and outdoor swimming pool, squash court, indoor badminton courts, tennis courts, bowling alleys, gym, large golf course etc. I tried the Body relaxation massage at the Spa resort and it was one of the best body massage I've ever had. Overall, a comfortable and relaxing stay especially those who enjoy the resort-style kinda vacation! This hotel's luxury style reminded me of my hotel stay in Emirates Palace in Abu Dhabi which I shall blog about in the next few blog posts.

Brunei Darussalam - A country whose majority of population consist of Muslim Malays, Islam plays a central role in the people's lives. Alcohol is banned in the country and Bahasa Melayu is the official language. A visit to the mosques requires women to be entirely covered up. I was given long black clothings to put on before entering the mosque and it's interesting to see how they had a mini wardrobe of black robes for tourists visiting the mosque. We also had to remove our footwear and hat when we went inside. A secret tip: Visit both mosques in the day and in the night to see how amazingly beautiful and different they look!
1. The Sultan Omar Ali Saifuddin Mosque - constructed in 1958 at a high cost of USD5 million dollars where the Sultan spared no expense to import Italian marble and pillars, granite from Shanghai and golden crystal chandeliers from England, luxurious carpets from Saudi Arabia and a golden dome made entirely from real gold. It is situated in an artificial lagoon right in the heart of the city of Bandar Seri Begawan just facing the famous water village - Kampong Ayer. The interiors were beautiful but no photos were allowed inside. The mosque which can fit 3000 people only recently allowed visitors and tourists inside for a glimpse. This mosque has been rated one of the most beautiful mosques in the world and you have to see it to understand how magnificent it looks.
2. Jame'Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque- built to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Sultan's reign in 1994, this is the largest mosque in Brunei. It's sheer grandeur and luxurious interiors proved how meticulous the architects were in designing such a beautiful place of worship. The Sultan of Brunei visits this mosque for prayer and there is high security in this place. This splendid mosque acts as a symbol of the devotion to Islam of the people and being surrounded by a beautiful garden and waterfalls, the place has a peaceful tranquility.
Brunei Darussalam - The famous Kampong Ayeralso known as "The Venice of the East" is the world's largest water village made entirely out of stilt houses and wooden walkways. It is built on the Brunei river and consists of a cluster of 42 villages. The water village has their own schools, mosques, homes and also a hospital. It is a proudly preserved heritage area of Brunei and many tourists can visit the area using a boat.
After a tour of Kampong Ayer, we decided to go on a river hunt for Brunei's famous Probiscus Monkeys distinguished by their long noses who are under risk of extinction. The monkeys can only be found on the island of Borneo. We spotted a few of them using a pair of binoculars. They were extremely afraid of people and loud noises and we were lucky to have a private boat all to ourselves. We spent a few hours searching along the river and deep into the mangrove swamps to hunt for them. Other tourists boats did not manage to see any monkeys as they were too noisy! The boatman also taught us how to drive the boat so he can take a rest while we had fun along the river!!! We gave him a big tip of course for such excellent service!
L'Atelier de Joel Robuchon is my favourite French Fine Dining Restaurant. So far, this is my third time blogging about his Michelin Stars Restaurant. I love it as it uses my favourite colours - Red and Black to design the entire restaurant. It is Bold, Modern & Elegant. Dining with class!
Joel Robuchon is born in France, he was titled "Chef of the Century, by the guide Gault Millau in 1989 and was also award the Meileur Ouvrier de France (France's Best Craftman) in cuisine in 1976. He operates a dozen of restaurants in Macau, Las Vegas, Hong Kong, London, Tokyo, etc, with a Total of 28 Michelin Guide Stars among them. He has the MOST Michelin Stars among any chef in the world.
By the way, those guys beside me in the photo above, are the gorgeous butlers. So far, from all the Joel Robuchon restaurants that I have visited, all the restaurants have really good looking and charming doorman, servers, sommeliers, chefs~ Scroll back on all my blogs about them, you will notice, quite a few cute chefs!
In the last 2 blogs about him, I have visited his London's Joel Robuchon (2 Michelin Stars), La Cuisine de Joel Robuchon, and Taipei's Joel Robuchon, Salon de The de Joel Robuchon. I was delighted when he opened another restaurant in Singapore. It is located at Sentosa St Michael's Hotel. Driving to St Michael's Hotel is a little tricky, it would be advisable to use Google Maps to find your way there. There's plenty of parking spaces there, but if you would like to impress your girl, valet parking is also available. Singapore's Joel Robuchon have not received any Michelin Stars, just yet. But the food, ambience and waiters there, are still impeccable.
There are 2 dining choices for you at this restaurant. You may choose to dine at the Red & Black theme room calledL'Atelier de Joel Robuchon,or to dine at their classic orangey dim setting, called Joel Robuchon Restaurant. So far, he has 4 restaurants that have been awarded 3 Michelin Stars: Tokyo, Las Vegas, Macau, Hong Kong.
Cindy and I love the food there! The set up inside the place, was very similar to the other 2 Joel Robuchon that I have visited in London and Taipei. Everything was Red and Black. It was really pleasant to my eyes. It was dim, modern and very romantic! Absolutely one of the best restaurants in Singapore to celebrate Valentine's Day. A must try is their Le Crabe Royal, Lobster Salad, Black Pepper Rib Eye Steak, and all their deserts are beautiful~ Every single desert that I have tried there is amazingly memorable, as the presentation is amazing. Valentine's Day is coming! It is time to prepare and make early reservations on where to take your loved one this 14th of February 2013. Saint Valentine's Day is celebrated by most countries around the world. This special tradition begun as a liturgical celebration of an early Christian saint called Valentinus (Saint Valentine). He was imprisoned for secretly performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry. During his imprisonment, he is said to have healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius. Legend states that before his execution, he wrote a farewell note to her - "From your Valentine".
From today till 14 February, I will be sharing romantic places and restaurants whereby you can celebrate this special day. One of my favourite places which I think would be very romantic is to visit Gardens By The Bay.
Gardens By The Bay was introduced by the Singapore government to transform Singapore from a "Garden City" to a "City in a Garden". Grant Associates and Gustafson Porter were the 2 firms that was awarded the master plan design for the Bay South and Bay East Gardens.
Gardens By The Bay, is really cold. If you are planning to surprise your girl there, ensure that you bring a jacket or coat for her. After touring the indoors Cloud Dome and Flower Dome, you may choose to take her to dine at the restaurants there. There are 2 really romantic restaurants at Gardens By The Bay: Pollen Fine Dining & SuperTree by Indochine.

Pollen serves mainly Mediterranean-inspired modern European cuisine. It is surrounded by Olive Trees, herbs, vegetation and a sub 20 degree temperature. Michelin Star Chef Jason Atherton heads Pollen, after his acclaimed Tapas bar in Chinatown, Esquina.
Pollen's food was really good. A lot of their dishes were complimented with bits and pieces of edible flowers and leaves. It is really quite an artistic yet natural dish! Extremely refreshing! Their dishes were very well presented. Most of them are made of interesting ingredients.
A big group of us went there, so we managed to try many different dishes. Their beef and duck were really tender. Their fish were fresh and it melts in your mouth. We also had a bottle of red wine. Service there was excellent. Their servers would explain to you, what you are having, how the meal was prepared, what sauce would you eat your meal with, etc. It was a wonderful experience! The ambience of the place was dim and romantic.
Their dessert there looks so pretty that you wouldn't want to eat them.
At the end of our meal, a server carried out a classic wooden box out, it was filled with Pralines. We were spoilt for choice! All the Pralines in the box looks delicious. Some of us, managed to take 2 pieces instead of just 1 complimentary piece per person. It was truly an amazing experience.

The next place that I think would be really romantic is also just around the corner. Supertree by Indochine has teamed up with internationally known local celebrity architect Mink Tan to put Michael Ma's innovation vision into reality. Creating an urban, eco-utopia ambience. This restaurant is sitting on the top of a super tree that is part of Gardens By The Bay. These super trees were built to allow heat and steam from the cooling systems of The Cloud Dome and Flower Dome to be freed into the open air.
SuperTree by Indochine serves food which is meant to be healthy and made mainly of organic food. They are known for thier super fresh juice concoction, bespoke of Eastern and Western influenced cocktails made of fresh ingredients. These were some of the food Karen and Lora have tried.
The view from the top is really pretty, the lights from the other trees lights up in different colours. It is really a very romantic spot to be at. After dinner, you may choose to step outdoors to enjoy the scenic view of the rest of Singapore from their roof top.
I did a survey with my male friends, and most of them says, that I look better with little or no make up.
